Titus Welliver, Alison Pill, and Justin Kirk have signed on to voice the Adult Swim adaptation of "Get Jiro," the graphic novel inspired by Anthony Bourdain's life and philosophy. The series, created by Alessandro Tanaka, launches later this year on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.
The show centers on a renegade sushi chef navigating the culinary underworld with the same rebellious spirit Bourdain brought to food television. Tanaka promised viewers a blend of "food, mayhem and violence" that captures the late chef's larger-than-life persona and his refusal to play by industry rules.
Welliver, best known for his lead role in Amazon's "Bosch" franchise, joins a voice cast that includes Pill (fresh off her role in Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Live Action") and Kirk (veteran of HBO's "Weeds"). Their involvement signals Adult Swim's commitment to attracting prestige talent for the project, moving beyond the platform's typical comedy-focused animation slate.
The choice of Adult Swim proves strategic. The HBO Max alternative channel specializes in irreverent, adult-oriented animation that values style and substance over mass appeal. It's the home of "Harley Quinn," "Scavengers Reef," and "Noodle Incident" - shows that balance graphic content with strong character work and unexpected emotional depth.
Bourdain's legacy remains complicated in popular culture. Since his death in 2018, documentaries, podcasts, and now this animated series attempt to preserve his influence while exploring the darkness beneath his charisma. "Get Jiro" takes a fictionalized approach, transforming Bourdain's spirit into an original character rather than a direct biography.
