George Lucas voices a character in Illumination's "Minions & Monsters," arriving July 1. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri revealed the casting to Collider, noting that Lucas reached out after becoming a fan of the studio's work, particularly the "Despicable Me" franchise.

The legendary "Star Wars" creator met Meledandri roughly two years ago. That connection directly led to Lucas's involvement in the spinoff. Meledandri emphasized Lucas's genuine enthusiasm for Illumination's output, which opened the door for the collaboration.

"Minions & Monsters" expands the "Despicable Me" universe beyond Gru and his minions. The spinoff continues Illumination's strategy of mining the franchise for fresh storytelling angles. After the success of "Minions" (2015) and "Minions: The Rise of Gru" (2022), the studio recognizes the merchandising and theatrical potential of these yellow characters.

Lucas's involvement represents a rare public appearance from the filmmaker. He rarely voices animated characters or participates in acting roles. His decision to work with Illumination signals the studio's pull in Hollywood and the trust major creative figures place in Meledandri's vision.

The timing works for Illumination. Summer 2025 sees intense competition for family audiences. "Minions & Monsters" will compete against other tentpoles for box office share. Adding Lucas's name to the project generates headlines and appeals to adults who grew up with "Star Wars" while their kids consume the "Despicable Me" films.

This casting also reflects how legacy filmmakers increasingly engage with animated properties. The medium no longer carries stigma in Hollywood. Studios attract A-list talent by offering meaningful creative participation rather than quick paycheck appearances.
