Matt Reeves gifted fans their first glimpse of Robert Pattinson suiting up as Batman again. The director posted a teaser video on social media showing Pattinson in full costume, set to dramatic orchestral music, with the Dark Knight filmed from behind as he turns slowly into frame.
The reveal comes as Warner Bros. pushes The Batman Part II into 2028, extending the gap between the first film's 2022 release and its sequel by six years. Reeves directed the original noir-inflected take on Gotham that earned $770 million worldwide and established Pattinson as a divisive but committed version of Bruce Wayne. Critics praised the film's moody atmosphere and 2 hour 56 minute runtime, which prioritized detective work over spectacle.
The production timeline reflects both Reeves' meticulous approach and the studio's shifting priorities. Reeves has been attached to develop the HBO series The Penguin, a spinoff centered on Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot that premiered in 2024. That project demanded his attention while The Batman Part II remained in development.
The delay also signals Warner Bros.' recalibration of its DC film slate. Unlike the chaotic James Gunn era that preceded it, DC Studios under Gunn and Peter Safran has favored a slower, more deliberate rollout. The Batman universe exists somewhat separately from the broader DC Extended Universe plans, giving Reeves more creative autonomy but also lower immediate franchise pressure.
Pattinson's return remains confirmed despite multiple filmmaking commitments. He recently wrapped work on David Fincher's Zoom project and has several other films in various stages. His willingness to stay attached to the Batman role speaks to both Reeves' direction and the creative control the filmmaker offers his actors.
