Hollywood's obsession with interconnected storytelling has officially migrated from the multiplex to the streaming screen. Showrunners are now pitching sprawling narrative universes across multiple series with the confidence of inevitability. We're told this is what audiences want. We're told this is the future. We're told skepticism is quaint.
It deserves more than that.
The trend speaks for itself in recent announcements. Ryan Murphy's plan to merge different "American Horror Story" seasons into a single narrative. A new "Stranger Things" spinoff launching on a different platform than the original series. Apple and other streamers doubling down on shows that operate within larger multiversal frameworks. The underlying message is consistent: fragmentation is a feature, not a bug. Complexity is sophistication. Audiences will follow characters and concepts across platforms, timeslots, and release schedules because the ecosystem demands it.
But this narrative conflates ambition with inevitability. Just because a trend is popular among creatives and studios doesn't mean it's what audiences actually want at scale.
Let's consider the data points we do have. When shows expand beyond their core narrative, viewership frequently contracts. Sophomore seasons disappoint. Spinoffs struggle. Yes, some interconnected universes work brilliantly. But survivorship bias distorts our perception. We remember the successes and forget the dozens of failed expansion attempts that came before them.
The real issue is structural. The cinematic universe model works in film because you choose to see each installment as a complete transaction. You buy a ticket. The story concludes. The experience is finite and satisfying on its own terms. Television doesn't function this way. Viewers don't commit to multiple shows across multiple platforms out of obligation. They commit because individual stories compel them.
When a show's narrative requires viewers to simultaneously watch another series to understand it, you've created friction. You've added complexity. You've shifted from "watch this because it's great" to "watch this because you need it to understand that." The conversion rate on that proposition has historically been brutal.
There's also a platform question that gets glossed over. When "Stranger Things" spinoffs launch elsewhere, are we really talking about a unified universe? Or are we talking about licensing different stories under an established brand? The creative intent may be multiversal. The business reality is fragmentation. Audiences experience these as separate shows that happen to share IP.
This matters because it affects who can actually engage with these stories. A viewer who subscribes to Netflix may not subscribe to Apple TV. They shouldn't have to. The idea that consumers will maintain five simultaneous streaming subscriptions to follow interconnected narratives is based more on industry wish-thinking than behavioral reality.
The production argument is equally questionable. Studios claim that building larger universes is more efficient. It's supposedly cheaper to develop characters across multiple projects than to develop new ones. This might be true in development meetings. But when shows underperform because they're structurally dependent on audiences understanding prior installments, the efficiency gains evaporate.
None of this means interconnected storytelling is inherently flawed. When it works, it can be genuinely thrilling. The question is whether it should be treated as a default strategy rather than an occasional creative choice.
The trend deserves scrutiny precisely because it's being presented as inevitable. It's not. It's an experiment that works sometimes and fails frequently. It benefits studios and streamers more than audiences. And it often prioritizes franchise complexity over narrative clarity.
Until viewership data consistently demonstrates that audiences prefer fragmented multiversal storytelling over singular, compelling narratives, we should remain skeptical of those selling it as the future. The future isn't predetermined. It's built on what actually works.
