Xolo Maridueña wasn't banking on a return to the DC Universe after his 2023 standalone debut as Blue Beetle. The young actor found himself in limbo as Warner Bros Discovery and new DC Studios boss James Gunn methodically rebuilt the franchise's interconnected universe from scratch.
That uncertainty evaporated when Gunn personally called Maridueña while he vacationed in Japan with friends. The director informed him that Blue Beetle would appear in "Superman: Man of Tomorrow," the cornerstone film launching Gunn's DCU continuity in 2026.
"I was the most humbled," Maridueña said of the phone call.
The casting choice signals Gunn's intentions to fold Maridueña's Jaime Reyes into a broader superhero ecosystem rather than isolate the character in standalone stories. Bringing Maridueña back cements Blue Beetle as canon within Gunn's vision. The actor's inclusion in "Superman: Man of Tomorrow" positions Jaime Reyes as a supporting player in the larger tapestry rather than a franchise unto himself.
